Loved Cars Have Names

$

I have had a lot of cars over the years, from classics to modern sports cars. But only a few have been special enough to warrant giving them a nickname. This last week I spent behind the wheel driving across 9 states in a car I paid just $1,000 for. We nicknamed that car the "Rust-O-Bird" because it was a trusty but rusty old T-Bird.

The "Rust-O-Bird"
Over the years certain cars I've owned have been worthy of being named. "The Pig" was a 1954 Ford Crestline that was a cobbled together, the "Blugeot" was my bright blue Peugeot, and "Tank" was a 67 Ford Galaxie that drove like an old battle tank. Coming up with a name can be personal for many or just something that happens by chance, my classic Mini was just called "Cooper" and my little sister, when she was 6, decided that our blue Ford Escort would be named "Grover".

"Cooper"

But in case you are having a hard time coming up with a name for your car, the team at Mobil 1™ has created the Nam-u-lator to help create the perfect name for your ride. I took the Nam-u-lator quiz myself for our 1962 Austin Healey project, the name it came up with is "The Broadster" a fitting name for a tiny two-seat sports car that I will be taking mostly on long cruises in the mountains with my friends.

“The Broadseter” prepped to take on a Mexico Road Race

Non-car people won't get it – they won't understand why you named your car – but for me, cars have always been a major part of my life. From shaping my career to giving me an outlet, be it behind the wheel or working on a project in the garage, most of my favorite memories include a car. I met my best friends because of cars and we bonded while building and driving them. We give cars names because they mean something to us. Sure they get us where we need to go, but the right car takes us so much further.

Receive a free personalized license plate frame like mine with the purchase of 5 quarts of Mobil 1 at your local AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, or Pep Boys store.

This is a sponsored post, however, the stories and opinions are my own.

1959 Troy Roadster

Sometimes a really interesting car catches my eye when I am browsing the auction sites, and this one-off Troy Roadster caught my attention when I was browsing the upcoming Mecum Houston Auction Lots.

This one of a kind car was built by Wally Troy in 1959 and was featured in Hot Rod Magazine in 1960. The lightweight handbuilt aluminum body is powered a 350ci Chevrolet V8 with twin 4-barrel carburetors, backed by a 4 speed manual transmission. With side pipes, Stewart Warner Gauges and knockoff wire wheels it really captures the 50's/60's roadster look.  For more on this car visit it's official listing page on Mecum's website HERE.

Ford Takes on Daytona

Twelve drivers. Four cars. One team. It’s become a common refrain for FordChip Ganassi Racing and remains at the core of the effort as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and FIA World Endurance Championship teams unite this month for one goal – to win at the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Ford’s history with the most prestigious sports car race in North America stretches back to the birth of the event in its current 24-hour format.

In 1966, drivers Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby drove a Ford GT40 MkII to the win the first time the race featured 24-hour racing. They went on to win the 12 Hours of Sebring that year before Miles finished second at the Le Mans 24 Hours with co-driver Denny Hulme, where Ford went down in history for using single-minded determination to win at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

This year, Ford Chip Ganassi Racing fields four cars of three drivers each, each one as impressive as the last. INDYCAR aces Scott Dixon (NZ) and Tony Kanaan (Brazil), who won the event with Ford in prototype in 2015, join the fulltime lineups of the #67 (Ryan Briscoe/Aus and Richard Westbrook/UK) and #69 (Andy Priaulx/UK and Harry Tincknell/UK) Ford GTs.

Sébastien Bourdais (France) returns in the #66 Ford GT with drivers Joey Hand (US) and Dirk Müller (Ger), with whom he won the GTE Pro class title at Le Mans last year. Billy Johnson (US), who helped develop the production Ford GT and won the IMSA Grand Sport championship last year in a Shelby GT350R-C, returns in the #68 Ford GT.

While Kanaan makes his first race start in a Ford GT, fulltime driver Tincknell is a Rolex 24 At Daytona rookie – although certainly not a newcomer to sports car racing.

That’s not to mention the returning fulltime drivers of the cars in both series, all of whom battled for wins at every race last season. In 2016, the Ford GT program won six races and started from the front of the grid eight times, with victories coming at Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Mosport, Le Mans, Fuji and Shanghai.

Leading the team is Chip Ganassi, the only team owner in history to win the Le Mans 24 Hours, Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, Brickyard 400, Rolex 24 At Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring.

Ganassi says the Ford GT team has unfinished business in Daytona after last year’s disappointing start.

“Overall, when you look back at 2016, I would say ‘mission accomplished’ when it came to debuting this program with Ford,” Ganassi said. “We won races, competed for the championship in both IMSA and WEC and of course won in Le Mans. Like any new program, you’re going to have some growing pains as we did here in Daytona but we have worked through all of those and finished 2016 strong. This year is a totally different scenario. Not only do we have four cars instead of two, we also have a 24-hour win under our belts and a season’s worth of experiences with this car. I can’t wait to see what this year’s race brings.”

Ford Chip Ganassi Racing will again campaign four Ford GTs full time for its second year of competition – two in the North American IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and two in the global FIA World Endurance Championship.

“We’re ready to get this second season started with Ford GT,” said Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “We walked away from last year happy with what we were able to accomplish, but that doesn’t mean the job’s done. The team did a great job preparing in the very short off-season and we believe we’re prepared to compete for championships in 2017.”

The 19th BMW Art Car will feature in the 55th Rolex 24

The 2017 motor racing season will shift up a gear, when BMW Motorsport, BMW Team RLL and BMW of North America launch their 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship (IWSC) campaign on 28th/29th January at the classic Daytona International Speedway. At the biggest 24-hour race in North America, BMW Team RLL will have the rare honour of racing a BMW Art Car, only the ninth of the 19-car BMW Art Car Collection to race since the programme’s start in 1975. John Baldessari (USA), one of the world’s most respected conceptual artists, joins luminaries such as Alexander Calder (1975), Andy Warhol (1979) and Jeff Koons (2010) as an Art Car creator.

The BMW M6 continues as the foundation of BMW’s effort in international sports car racing in 2017, and BMW Team RLL will continue to race two BMW M6 GTLM specification cars in the IWSC. The line-up of the number 19 BMW M6 GTLM Art Car features veteran Bill Auberlen (USA) and BMW works driver Alexander Sims (GBR). Sims was part of the winning ROWE Racing team with the BMW M6 GT3 at last year’s 24-hour race in Spa-Francorchamps (BEL). The regular drivers will be supported by DTM stars Augusto Farfus (BRA) and Bruno Spengler (CAN). Both Farfus and Spengler raced the BMW M6 GTLM at Daytona last year with Auberlen and Dirk Werner (DE), finishing fifth in the debut race for the car. For Auberlen, the 48-year-old Californian, the honour of racing a BMW Art Car falls on the 20th anniversary of his first win for BMW at the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 1997.

John Edwards (USA) and Martin Tomczyk (GER) will anchor the number 24 BMW M6 GTLM this season. Edwards, who begins his fifth season racing for BMW, will be joined by BMW works driver Tomczyk, now focusing on GT competition after 16 successful seasons in the DTM. As he did last season, Kuno Wittmer (CAN) will race the number 25 M6 in the four endurance rounds (Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen and Petit Le Mans). At Daytona, Nicky Catsburg (NLD) will be the fourth driver. Catsburg co-drove to a second-place GTD finish in last year’s Rolex 24.

In its eight seasons of North American sports car competition, BMW Team RLL has posted 13 victories among 60 podium finishes, winning the American Le Mans Series Manufacturer and Team championships in 2010 and repeating the feat and adding the driver title in 2011. Beginning with the BMW M3 GT2 in 2009, the team successfully introduced the BMW Z4 GTLM in 2013 and the BMW M6 GTLM in 2016.

Jens Marquardt (BMW Motorsport Director): “This year’s 24-hour race at Daytona will be special in many ways. Of course, racing a BMW Art Car is always unique. The interest for the number 19 BMW M6 GTLM designed by John Baldessari will be high, so I’m excited to see where we will be able to put the car in the final results. In addition, we brought some new drivers in for 2017. I’m sure that both Alexander Sims and Martin Tomczyk will cope well with their new challenge. The experience of Bobby Rahal’s BMW Team RLL and of the other drivers, Bill Auberlen and Edwards, surely make it easier for the two European drivers to come to terms with sports car racing in North America. After last year’s debut season of the BMW M6 GTLM our clear aim is to score our maiden win with this car in the IMSA series. Achieving this in such a tough race as the Rolex 24 will be extremely difficult. But, as usual, we will give it all to score a great result in the first race of the season. Reliability will be crucial – and I’m also confident in this respect.”

John Baldessari (Artist, BMW Art Car #19) : “When I look at the BMW Art Car series and all of the artists that came before me, I see them as competition.  Just the same as racing -- which is why I’ll cheer for the drivers of my Art Car.  I want them to win!  I spoke to Bill Auberlen and the best thing he told me was that he sees it as an honor and a highlight of his amazing career to have the chance to race a BMW Art Car.  I know he and the team will give it their all to come in first!”

Bobby Rahal (Team Principal, BMW Team RLL): “There's nothing like starting out the season with the most difficult race. In the recent past we have had some reasonable results with second place finishes in both 2014 and 2015. Last year wasn’t a great one for us but now, a year later, the car has certainly progressed and is more reliable. We think our pace will be reasonable, although no one is quite sure how good others may be despite all of the testing that has happened. For us, it’s just a matter of not having any problems. It sounds simplistic, but the least amount of time we spend in the pits the better chance we have of a podium. Our first job is to make sure we have the reliability, our second job is to make sure we have the pace and the third job is stay out of trouble on track. I’m very pleased with our driver line-up. We’ve always had good driver line-ups since day one of our relationship with BMW. That’s a huge plus obviously and that’s the part I worry about the least frankly.”

Bill Auberlen (No. 19 BMW M6 GTLM): “I am delighted that BMW chose me for the honour of driving an Art Car. I’ve been racing BMWs for many years and I can say without a doubt that this is a highlight of my career. We finished second at Daytona in 2014 and 2015, and fifth last year. I’m thinking there would be nothing better than to win on the 20th anniversary of my first Rolex 24 victory in 1997 for BMW.”

Alexander Sims (No. 19 BMW M6 GTLM): “I’m very excited about the Rolex 24, as it will be my first time racing in the States. The GTLM car is not far removed from the GT3 car I have raced, but with no ABS (anti-lock brake system) I am taking things one step at a time.”

Augusto Farfus (No. 19 BMW M6 GTLM): “It is always special to be in the Rolex 24, and on top of that this year I am driving a piece of art. It is an honour for me and I’m very thankful to BMW for giving me this opportunity. We’ve been close here quite a few times in past years with the BMW Z4 GTLM, and last year we made it to the finish and fifth place with the new BMW M6 GTLM. This year it just may be time to get it done.”

Bruno Spengler (No. 19 BMW M6 GTLM): “The Rolex 24 has been one of my highlights since first racing here in 2015 with BMW Team RLL. Many Canadians come to the race, so I can share the event with friends and family. I began with BMW in 2012 racing in the DTM and have heard of the Art Cars. I am honoured to now drive one and be part of such an important programme for the company.”

John Edwards (No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM): “We had a productive test focusing on integrating our new drivers. Things went very well, and I believe we are ready for the Rolex 24.”

Martin Tomczyk (No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM): “The Rolex 24 will be my first race in the US, so I am very excited. I have competed at Spa and the Nürburgring 24-hour races, but there certainly is something special about this race in America. I am genuinely looking forward to it.”

Nick Catsburg (No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM): “This will be my second Rolex 24. My first was last year. The BMW M6 GTLM is a bit different than the BMW M6 GT3 car I raced in Europe, but I am pleased with how the Roar test progressed. Our team is working well together and I am looking for a good result.”

Kuno Wittmer (No. 24 BMW M6 GTLM): “We have made good progress towards the second season of the BMW M6 GTLM. This will be the seventh Rolex 24 of my career and I would gladly wear a second Rolex on my wrist.”

Michelin Pilot Experience

$

by Mike Satterfield

This past week I was invited out to spend some time with the team from Michelin Tires. The purpose to test out the latest version of their legendary Pilot Sport series of tires the Pilot Sport 4 S. The event was hosted at the palatial Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage and upon arrival I was greeted with all kinds of amazing gifts including gear from UAS and Michelin, as well as a new DXO One Camera that I used to shoot the photos in this story.

Heading out to the first cocktail mixer of the event I started recognizing some of the other guests, celebrities, journalists, racing drivers, bloggers, and a few YouTubers. The night was amazing, music, drinks, a great presentation on Michelin, all capped off with an amazing dinner by a Michelin Star rated chef that they had flown in for the event.

The next morning in the rain we were driven out to a small parking area in the desert, waiting for us were three incredible cars. Each of us would get turn behind the wheel of a Ferrari California, Audi R8 V10, and an AMG Mercedes C63, all equipped with the new Pilot Sport 4 S tires. We would be piloting these cars across Joshua Tree National Park with a driving partner. My driving partner was actress Emelia Hartford, who is a certified car nut, and one heck of a driver.

Photo via Vice Media

The rain gave us a chance to try the new tires in extrem conditions, pouring rain, muddy roads, damp roads as the sun came out, and the new 4 S tires were impressive. In all of our hooning about in in other people's super cars, I never felt out of control. Pushing the Ferrari hard through the canyon in the rain soaked roads, the tires felt responsive, the grip was impressive, it made me wish that we didn't have a CHP escort so I could push it a bit more.

After testing all of the cars in and around Joshua Tree National Park, we drove to The Thermal Club for lunch and the team shared some technical knowledge on the new Pilot 4 S. The amount of engineering and research that went into these new tires is impressive, and something most consumers never think about. After lunch we would get to find out how all that engineering translated on the track in several events.

Out on the track we tested Michelin against the competition, all the cars were the same BMW 3 series, all on the same HRE Wheels, the only difference, the brand of tires. I personally drove on the Bridgestones, Continentals, and Michelins. The difference was amazing, the control, grip, and recovery time felt better with the new Michelin tires and the raw data proved it. Stopping distance was 20 feet shorter on average in my tests and my autocross times were faster by nearly 2 full seconds. Now this performance comes at a price, with the Michelin tire costing more than it's rivals, but I have to say the Michelin tires inspired confidence and really made a difference on the autocross track.

Photo via Vice Media
After autocross we headed over to the lead-follow session at the track where we had helmets strapped on and were put into brand new BMW M4s and told to chase after a pro driver in a M2. It was a blast and I was impressed with how much grip the Pilot Sport S 4 tires really provided. Again these are not track tires, these are street tires, with a 30,000 mile warranty. Needless to say I was impressed, I also was blow away with how different it feels to race a modern car like the M4 vs the classic cars I have taken out on the track. This experience has made me more than ever want to go to racing school and get my SCCA license.

Taking the Green M4 out on the track for some lead follow laps. Photo via Vice Media.
I finished the lead-follow session and headed across to the other side of the track where a fleet of super cars were being prepped. From the AMG GT and Audi R8 to the Shelby GT350R and Corvette Z07, we were in for a treat. In these cars we would be riding along as pro drivers took these cars to their limits out on the track. My ride was a blue Audi R8 V10 driven by a Michelin test driver who's name I couldn't hear through my helmet and the noise on the track.

The sun was setting and our hosts ushered us to the restaurant and lawn at The Thermal Club where a cocktail reception would keep us busy until dinner another Michelin Star meal was ready. It was an end to an amazing day. As we all shared stories over a drink, it was interesting to hear the same thing over and over from people, they loved the driving experience. Of course they loved the hotel, food, the incredible hospitality, the swag bags, and hanging out with celebrities, but the conversation would always go back to their passion for driving.

Photo via Vice Media
It was that passion for driving and motor sports that was shown from the team a Michelin that really made an impression on me. They have made a commitment to enhancing the driving experience. The new PS4S tires will be released shortly and will firstly be offered in 18" and 19" sizes with a wider range following. For more visit MichelinMan.com.

Future Classics Car Show

The 2nd annual Future Classics Car Show presented by ClassicCars.com was a rousing success with a sizable attendance of both cars and car enthusiasts. The event brought out more than 100 cars, ranging in years from 1975-2017, to the rooftop of the parking structure at the Scottsdale Quarter in celebration of vehicles that may not be honored elsewhere during Arizona’s Car Week. A 1998 Toyota Supra owned by Alek Heit was awarded Best of Show and other class winners included a 1977 Datsun 280z, a 1981 Pontiac Trans Am and a 2016 Chevrolet Corvette Z06.

2017 marked the second year of the Future Classics Car Show, set at the beginning of Arizona’s Car Week and offering an alternative to more traditional concours that happen around the Scottsdale area. One of the most unique aspects of the Future Classics Car Show is the expert panel of judges who are normally used to judging at events like Pebble Beach and Amelia Island and who are headed by Andy Reid, East coast editor for ClassicCars.com. This show encourages a wide demographic both in terms of age of attendees and owners, and the upper level of the Scottsdale Quarter offered a much more diverse crowd than you’d expect from a car show with Millennials and Boomers rubbing elbows as a DJ spun music all night long. As the show wound to a close, the vehicles circled down the parking structure’s ramps in something resembling a parade lap and dispersed upon exiting the structure.

Winners at this year’s Future Classics Show included:
Best of Show– 1998 Toyota Supra, Alek Heit
Featured Ford Class– 2017 Shelby GT350R, Jonathan Fonggee
Instant Classic (2006-2017) Domestic  – 2016 Corvette Z06, Ryan Barstad
1995-2005 Domestic2005 Pontiac GTO, Kyle Baker
1975-1994 Domestic1981 Trans Am, Mark Miller
Instant Classic (2006-2016) Euro  – 2011 E82, Bally
1995-2005 Euro– 2001 VW Jetta custom truck, Chris Kingston
1975-1994 Euro– 1976 BMW 2002, Rav Sandin
Instant Classic (2006-2017) Import  – 2014 Nissan GT-R, Nathan Ricci
1975 – 1994 Import – 1977 Datsun 280Z, Keith Ross
Diamond in the Rough2005 Scion Xb, Chris Wilson

“We couldn’t be happier with how this event came off,” said Roger Falcione, CEO of ClassicCars.com. “The turnout was incredible and the cars that showed up truly fit the theme of Future Classics. We’re also incredibly excited at the diverse crowd that this event attracted. This seems like the perfect gateway to help bring younger collectors and more traditional collectors together and help ensure the passing of the torch in this great hobby.”

First announced during the 2016 London Classic Car Show to great acclaim, construction is now complete on the very first of these hand crafted lightweight roadsters.

With only a very few being built, this will join the other Eagle Special Edition E-types as the most exclusive hand built cars in the world.

The Spyder GT builds upon the groundbreaking Eagle Speedster adding a folding roof to offer the best of both worlds – whatever the weather.

The 4.7 litre XK engine offers 330bhp and an impressive 340 ft lbs of torque, all in a car weighing just 1,029 kg. Extensive weight saving measures include a bespoke aluminium monocoque, aluminium gearbox, aluminium engine block and magnesium components.

More than thirty years of singular focus on the Jaguar E-Type comes into play with this, the fourth special edition E-Type in the series, the Eagle Spyder GT.

With the poise and performance of the Low Drag GT and the exquisite styling of the Speedster, the Spyder GT’s taller raked windscreen and folding roof offer the best of both worlds – whatever the weather.

Completely bespoke with extensive customer options, the few produced will be the most exclusive hand built cars in the world.

As with all Eagle Special Editions, the Spyder GT begins life as an original E-Type ready to be restored.

The aluminium monocoque features deeper sills, a lower floor pan and wider wheel arches featuring custom 16” wheels and tyres.

The bespoke, hand crafted interior features sumptuous leather and a gorgeous sweeping centre console - very much part of the Eagle Special Edition design DNA - complete with hidden handbrake lever. The attention to detail and level of finish throughout is truly exquisite.

The engineering perfectly blends original and new technology and the Eagle Spyder GT offers blistering performance. With 330bhp and 340 ft lbs of torque it powers from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds and pulls hard all the way to its top speed of over 170mph.

From the outset, the Spyder GT was designed to perform.

For long distance driving it has the calm assurance and the all the manners for touring - you sit cocooned in luxury with the view forward over the long bonnet and it’s a wonderful place to be. You have a solid sense of connection with the road, with precise handling characteristics gained from over 30 years of suspension development at Eagle.

When you put your foot down the Spyder GT transforms into a seriously exhilarating supercar.

In that instant the straight-six develops a whole new character - with so much torque the 4.7 litre engine pulls away with real intent, emitting a powerful deep growl as the exhaust barks, the crackling sounds on the overrun adding to the drama and excitement.

It’s an exceptional performer by any measure.

Working through the gears you quickly realise why the Eagle Special Edition E-Types have been subject of such enthusiastic acclaim. This is a driving experience like no other.

With so few being built, this will join the other Eagle Special Edition E-types as the most exclusive hand built cars in the world.

Henry Pearman, Managing Director at Eagle says:

“We’re really proud of what’s been achieved with our E-Type Special Editions, and the worldwide reaction has made all the years of effort and dedication completely worthwhile.

The Spyder GT represents the very best of what we do here at Eagle and we’re thrilled to present it to the world.”

Paul Brace, Design Director adds:

“The E-Type is such a superb car to work with, and being able to add the Spyder GT as the fourth Eagle Special Edition gives us all great pleasure. Again, the worldwide reaction has been incredible.

We’re glad that so many people share our passion for these wonderful cars”

“The result is a creation so beautiful and perfectly proportioned I could look at it for the rest of my life.” CHRIS EVANS /THE MAIL ON SUNDAY

“The Eagle Spyder GT is not only beautiful to look at, it's stunning to drive too. It typifies everything that the modern world eschews, leaving you in total control and, with modern suspension, handles better than any E-Type has before.” TIFF NEEDELL  / IOD DIRECTOR

“It sounds almost too good to be true, but Eagle’s Spyder GT has a silver-screen quality that makes you feel like you’re living in some perfect film of your own life.” HENRY CATCHPOLE/EVOMAGAZINE

The Grand National Roadster Show, the world’s longest running indoor car show, has recognized the top vehicles of its 68th annual show where over 400 individual awards were given out during the closing ceremony on Sunday, January 29. The prestigious America’s Most Beautiful Roadster (AMBR) was awarded to Troy Ladd, Ken Reister took America’s Most Beautiful Motorcycle, the Al Slonaker Memorial Award was presented to Ron Manier and the inaugural Pete Chapouris Memorial Award was given to Matt Gordon.

The 68th Annual Grand National Roadster Show lived up to its nickname of “The Grand Daddy of Them All” with well over 1,000 of the nation’s hottest custom vehicles on display for the 40,000 people in attendance. The cars in attendance were the best in their categories which included everything from customs to restorations, race cars, trucks, suede vehicles, hot rods, muscle cars, and street machines. At the end of this three-day event, the best of the best were recognized with a highly sought-after Grand National Roadster Show trophy.
One of the highest honors in the custom car world, the America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award is given to the best “open” hot rod in the country. This year, Troy Ladd of Hollywood Hot Rods earned his spot on the nine and a half-foot tall perpetual trophy alongside such famous builders as George Barris, Andy Brizio, Boyd Coddington, Barry White and Chip Foose as well as $10,000 in prize money. Troy’s car, a 1936 Packard Roadster called the “Mulholland Speedster” and owned by Bruce Wanta, was a crowd favorite throughout the event thanks to its exacting attention to detail and its eye-catching looks.

“In the 68 year history of the AMBR award we have seen a steady evolution of the art form of the roadster as builders continue to come up with new and innovative ways to modify these very traditional vehicles,” said John Buck, owner of Rod Shows and producer of the Grand National Roadster Show. “This year’s winner was no exception, as Troy Ladd brought one of the most spectacular and highly detailed roadsters we have seen to date. Throughout the event the crowd around this car was immense and it was the talk of the show.”

In addition to the AMBR award, the show also recognized the top custom motorcycle with a radically designed or hand-built frame and/or sheet metal with the America’s Most Beautiful Motorcycle award. This year, it was Colorado builder Ken Reister’s Chip Foose-designed “Xpression” motorcycle (which matches his 2007 AMBR-winning Foose-designed “Impression” roadster).
New to the Grand National Roadster Show for 2017 was the inaugural Pete Chapouris Memorial Award presented by Vintage Air. This new award recognizes the builder which best honors the style and customs of traditional hot rodding and was awarded to Matt Gordon for his ’32 Ford Roadster.

The Al Slonaker Memorial Award was the final special recognition award of the event and was awarded to the vehicle that the judges felt displayed the best originality, craftsmanship, and engineering outside of the AMBR contenders. This year, it was Ron Manier and his 1957 Chevrolet Nomad which impressed the judges enough to take home the trophy and $1,000 in prize money.

Inside the Bugatti Chiron Facility

At its facility in Molsheim in an idyllic location in Alsace, which has been the home of the marque since it was founded in 1909, Bugatti is making automobile dreams come true with the Chiron. Before customers can take delivery of their new Chiron, there is a lot to do. The first step is the configuration of the vehicle, which is completed by the customer together with a designer from Bugatti. Each Bugatti is unique and is manufactured in accordance with the customer’s personal wishes. This is why personalising is a top priority for Bugatti.

23 topcoat colours and eight carbon variants form the basic range for the exterior. In the interior, customers can choose from leather in 31 different colours or Alcantara in eight colours, as well as 30 stitching, 18 carpet and 11 belt colours. In addition to this basic range, thousands of other colours are possible. And in addition to that, individual colours may even be created to match a favourite handbag or the label on a customer’s preferred brand of mineral water. There are also many other design options such as logos or initials on the bottom of the rear spoiler or embroidery on the headrest and leather inlays on the central console. With its customising program “La Maison Pur Sang“, Bugatti is virtually in a position to meet a customer’s every wish – provided that installation in a super sports car is technically feasible and meets Bugatti’s high quality requirements.

Only when the customer has signed off the configuration does production planning start. The many small wheels of a complex process that runs to a strict time schedule are then set in motion. At the end of this process, a Chiron leaves the Atelier in Molsheim. Normally, a Chiron takes about nine months for this journey from configuration through to delivery – with an average degree of customising. The more unusual a customer’s wishes in terms of materials, colours or other details are, the more time will be required.

When a production slot has been assigned to a customer’s vehicle, the parts that are needed are ordered. From now on, the countdown has started and it will take about six months up to the delivery of the car. Now, Bugatti’s suppliers, who are located throughout Europe, work hard to deliver the parts that are needed to Molsheim in time for assembly.

One month before the start of production in Molsheim, the bodyshell is assembled with the monocoque and chassis substructure for the first time to ensure that everything fits together perfectly. Each part is assigned a kit number and is then transferred to the paint shop. It takes about three weeks to apply the various coats of paint. In the case of visible carbon fibre, a field in which Bugatti is the market leader in terms of production quality and diversity of colours, six layers are required. For the top coat, up to eight layers may be needed depending on whether the finish that has been ordered is uni, metallic or pearlescent. The process is so time-consuming because all layers are applied by hand and each individual coat needs to be sanded down and polished before work can start on the next coat.

Then the starting signal is given for the assembly of the Chiron in Molsheim. Christophe Piochon, Member of the Bugatti Board of Management responsible for Production and Logistics, watches over production, making sure that all processes run smoothly and there are no hitches. “Here in Molsheim, we have a small factory with a small warehouse. Neither our equipment nor our procedures can be compared with those of other car plants,” says the 40-year-old mechanical engineer, who worked in quality assurance with the Volkswagen Group before joining Bugatti. “’Just-in-time’ has a very special dimension for Bugatti,” he adds.

The production building for the Chiron, which Bugatti calls “Atelier“, has a floor space of more than 1,000 square metres. It was inaugurated in 2005 and has an oval configuration, based on the French brand’s logo, the Bugatti “Macaron”. It was designed by the renowned architect Professor Gunter Henn from Munich. For more than 10 years, the Veyron 16.4 and its derivatives were built here. For the Chiron, many modifications were made to the Atelier and associated facilities to take account of the new product properties and increased complexity of the production process. For example, exterior components are now pre-assembled at the technology centre in the plant area, where they are already subjected to initial inspection. In addition, a new rolling dynamometer was developed to accommodate the 1,500 PS developed by the Chiron. The most striking change is the floor in the Atelier. It is made from epoxy and is conductive, ensuring the dissipation of any electrostatic charges. In addition, the reflecting glossy white creates an atmosphere comparable with the catwalk of a fashion house. “We are building a super sports car. That is quite clear,” says Christophe Piochon. “But it is the way we do it, hand-crafting an individual product for each customer in this very special atmosphere, that makes us unique. This is ‘Haute Couture de l’Automobile‘“.

At Bugatti, no conveyor belts nor robots can be found. People work at stations, as in the workshop of a Formula One team. All in all, there are 12 stations. At the first station, the powertrain is prepared for assembly. This is supplied pre-assembled from the Volkswagen Group engine plant in Salzgitter, where specialists build the 1,500 PS engine in a pilot hall equipped exclusively for Bugatti and then put it through its paces on a test bench for eight hours. At the same time, a similar procedure is applied to the new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which has been made bigger and stronger to accommodate the high power output of the Chiron and the gigantic torque of 1,600 Nm.

At the second station, the powertrain is installed on the chassis. Thanks to the increased use of carbon and other lightweight materials, this unit weighs 628 kilograms and is no heavier than that of the Veyron, the final version of which had a power output which was 300 PS lower. There are two chassis building platforms in the Atelier. At each station, three employees spend about one week on the assembly of the chassis. In contrast to a conventional production line worker, each of these employees must be in a position to assemble the entire chassis, including the rear end, monocoque and frame.

The rear end of the vehicle is built round the powertrain. At the same time, the monocoque and the front end are joined together and equipped with the wiring harnesses required. The pipes connecting the engine at the rear with the radiators at the front are also installed. Cooling is crucially important in the Chiron. The vehicle is equipped with three water pumps, one large pump for the high-temperature cycle and two smaller pumps for the low-temperature cycle. The cooling water pipes have the same diameter as a fire brigade’s spray lance and the flow rate is correspondingly high. The coolant flows to the engine along the driver’s side and returns on the passenger’s side after cooling the engine.

The only electronic tool used in chassis assembly is the new EC nutrunner system. This allows a data curve of each bolt tightened on the chassis to be stored on a computer connected to the system, which then gives the assembly worker a signal when the right torque value is reached. There are more than 1,800 bolted joints on a Chiron, with documentation required for 1,068.

The high point of chassis assembly is definitely the marriage – the operation of joining the monocoque and the rear end. 14 titanium bolts ensure that the bond between the two units is durable and extremely strong. Titanium was selected to save weight; each bolt only weighs 34 grams.

Finally, four wheels are bolted to the chassis and it then rolls forward to the next station – the filling unit, where all the operating fluids are filled into the vehicle: engine and transmission oil, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid and coolant. The coolant is filled in under vacuum which is maintained for 10 minutes in order to test the coolant cycle for any leaks again. This is where the 16-cylinder engine is started in the vehicle for the first time – always an exciting moment for the production team.

After this stage, the chassis travels a few metres to the rolling dynamometer. This is the part of the production facility that called for the greatest investment in preparation for the Chiron. The modifications, including larger electric cables, were necessary as the old rolling dynamometer could not absorb the 1,500 PS and 1,600 Nm developed by the Chiron. The new unit is so powerful that it can produce electricity with a current of up to 1,200 amps during operation. Bugatti feeds the excess power generated to the local grid in Molsheim. The Bugatti rolling dynamometer is the most powerful of its type in the world.

The impressive dynamometer is installed in a separate room with its own ventilation system for vehicle cooling and pollution control. For safety reasons, all the wheels of the car are fastened to the floor using special adapters. Speeds of up to 200 km/h and acceleration under full power (1,500 PS) can be simulated. A team member sits behind the wheel and follows all the tests on the monitor. Among other things, he monitors the engine settings, communication between the engine and transmission, the adjustment of the mass airflow meter and the clutch as well as the functioning of ESC, ABS and other programs. The tests take between two and three hours, during which time the vehicle covers about 60 kilometres.

When the Chiron has passed all its tests on the rolling dynamometer, it is fitted with its exterior skin at the following station. Here, the exterior parts, which are made entirely from carbon in the case of the Chiron, are installed on the vehicle. As some of the individual lightweight parts are very large and fragile, this work is extremely demanding, which is why a pre-assembly stage was introduced for the Chiron. Pre-assembly is completed in Bugatti’s new technology centre, which is located only 200 metres away from the Atelier. The body parts are installed here on special mobile frames, with assembly points identical to those of the Chiron. The lighting conditions in this assembly hall are the same as in the Atelier, which means that any problems with the paintwork or damage to individual parts can be identified and remedied before the parts are installed on the vehicle. It takes between three and four days before the body parts have been installed on the Chiron and the gaps and joints have been precisely adjusted.

The next stage is a water test. Here, the Chiron is exposed to monsoon rain of varying intensity for 30 minutes to show that there are no leaks.

The interior fittings are only installed when this test has been completed. Here, two team members make sure that all the parts are installed in the right place in the interior of the Chiron, a process that normally takes about three days. Customers can choose between a luxurious variant with full leather trim or a more sporty combination of leather and carbon fibre.

When the interior has been completed, the Chiron is prepared for its test and final inspection drive. For this purpose, the entire super car is covered by a strong transparent plastic foil. This process alone takes a whole day. A further day is required for removing the foil and cleaning the vehicle following the test drive.

Before the Chiron leaves the Atelier for the first time on its test drive, the electronic functions of the vehicle are tested and the track of the wheels is adjusted. By the way, Bugatti does not use the original wheels and underbody on the test drive to ensure that these parts are protected against wear and damage. During the test drive, the Chiron is driven 300 km through the Vosges to the airport in Colmar, where it completes test of functions requiring speeds in excess of 250 km/h on the runway. The return trip is covered at a more “relaxed” pace on the Autobahn to allow the vehicle to cool down. If the test driver gives the Chiron the thumbs up following the trip, the transmission oil is changed and the original wheels and underbody are installed in the Atelier. The car then completes a last test drive over 50 km before final dynamic approval is given.

At this stage, the Chiron is transferred to the paint booth, where it is prepared for the finish. All the protective foils are removed and the vehicle is then cleaned and polished. The cosmetic preparation of the Chiron takes two days before it is transferred to the light tunnel. Here, a team member carries out a relentless inspection of the finish for more than six hours, after which the Chiron returns to the paint booth. The team member then devotes himself to intensive optimization until all the visible blemishes have been remedied. This can take between three hours and three weeks if a highly personalised component needs to be produced again. When the auditor in the light tunnel has given his final approval of the finish, Christophe Piochon meets the Heads of the Sales, Quality Assurance and Customer Service Departments for management approval. Only when the managers are satisfied with the condition of the vehicle can an appointment for handing over to the customer be arranged.

Usually, the customer will already have visited Molsheim several times by then. Following a test drive in a demonstration vehicle, the signature of the contract and the configuration of their own personal Chiron, customers welcome the opportunity to witness the creation of their vehicle personally during production in the Atelier. Those, who really want to, can even spend a day working on their own sports car.

After about two months, the Chiron leaves the Atelier. During this time, 20 employees, including two women, have assembled a total of about 1,800 individual parts to create the world’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car. They are supported by 17 logistics employees and 15 quality assurance colleagues. Following production, their colleagues in Customer Service, the famous Bugatti Flying Doctors, assume responsibility for individual support to ensure that each vehicle remains in perfect condition and owners can be sure of having added the crowning glory to their collection - the ultimate super sports car.

The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Middle East is preparing to inaugurate the 2017 season. This is the fourth one-make series for the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeos, which have already successfully participated in the other series Europe, Asia and North America. The Lamborghini Super Trofeo Middle East is going to make its debut on the 5,554-meter Yas Marina circuit, in the United Arab Emirates. The circuit is already home to eight editions of the Abu Dhabi F1 Grand Prix, where the first of the three double rounds of the Super Trofeo is scheduled on February 9-11.

The Middle East Series will make a real debut and will then get to the Dubai track only one week later (on February 16-18). The same track will also host the last round (March 2-4). The Super Trofeo Middle East is therefore an important addition to the rich international competitive scene, representing Lamborghini in an event that attracts the presence of the most renowned teams.

So far, eleven teams have responded to the call. They will have the opportunity to anticipate, by a couple of months, the beginning of their seasonal commitment to the three other continental series of the Super Trofeo. About twenty cars are expected to be fielded by the teams. Among these is Bonaldi Motorsport, a reference name in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe,  in which last year they won the team and the PRO-AM titles, with a crew formed by Adrian Amstutz and Patrick Kujala.

Aston Martin is delighted to announce the opening of an exclusive exhibition of images by fashion and advertising photographer, Mark Shaw at No.8 Dover Street, London. The display of captivating works from one of the 1950s top photographers will open straight after London Fashion Week on 23 February 2017 and run for six months.
No.8 Dover Street is Aston Martin’s brand experience centre located in one of London’s most sought after streets. The exclusive Mark Shaw exhibition entitled ‘Mark Shaw: A Moment in Time’ will reveal many of the hidden gems of his fashion and celebrity portfolio curated by the Mark Shaw Photographic Archive.

Mark Shaw had a prolific career and is best known for his portraits of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy. His charming images of celebrities from Brigitte Bardot to Grace Kelly, Dame Elizabeth Taylor and Coco Chanel and iconic fashion images celebrating the creations from Dior, Balmain and Givenchy graced the pages of LIFE magazine, the fashion magazines of the day and other publications. Upon his untimely death in 1969 at the age of 47, most of his work was put into storage where it remained unseen for over 40 years.

Marek Reichman, EVP & Chief Creative Officer said: “We’re excited to be hosting this beautiful collection of photographs from a bygone era at No.8 Dover Street. Mark Shaw’s work for LIFE and other publications has become a captivating collection and we are delighted to be able to share it with everyone who visits our brand centre.”

Visitors will be able to view images from fashion shoots for the top designers including Dior and Givenchy alongside iconic celebrity photographs such as ‘Grace Kelly Laughing’ and a rare picture of an unusually relaxed Coco Chanel in her apartment on the Rue Cambon in Paris. Fashion Designer Yves St Laurent and actress Audrey Hepburn also feature in this carefully curated collection.

All of the photographs in the Mark Shaw exhibition are strictly limited edition prints with less than 30 of each being available worldwide. Buyers* will join celebrities such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Cindy Crawford and Jennifer Aniston as owners of Mark Shaw prints.

Aston Martin at No. 8 Dover Street is open seven days a week from 10 am until 6 pm from Monday to Friday and from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Rally Sweden

The all-new specification World Rally Cars head for another fresh challenge as the second round of the FIA World Rally Championship takes the contenders to the snowy and remote forests of Sweden and Norway for the only true winter round in the series. And, once again, fans can catch all the spectacular sideways action on Red Bull TV.
Skinny tires equipped with tungsten-tipped steel studs are essential on this weekend’s Rally Sweden (9-12 February) and provide remarkable grip as they penetrate the frozen ground. Drivers can often be seen wearing heated racing boots and anti-glare glasses that provide greater definition of the landscape.
The backdrop of the white forests provides a unique spectacle in the World Rally Championship and while a loose surface car set-up is the norm, engineers are forced to find solutions to keep the cars running optimally in these sub-zero temperatures.

Because of its specialized nature, Rally Sweden has been dominated by the Scandinavians during the 63 years it has run, Frenchman Sébastien Loeb becoming the first outsider to claim victory back in 2004. Since then, only Sébastien Ogier has achieved a similar feat.
Underlining his on-going superiority, Ogier won last month’s season opener in Monte Carlo on his debut for the M-Sport team – now the four-time champion is aiming to build on that success in Sweden.
“We had a dream start to the season, but we can’t let that distract us. There is still a lot of work to do and Rally Sweden is a truly unique event,” he said.
“It’s an event that I really enjoy and we reach incredible speeds on the snow and ice – something that will only increase with the new cars this year. That means that there are no margins for error and you have to be very precise. There are often just a handful of seconds separating each competitor, so every second really does count.
“If we can secure another podium result, it would be a fantastic start and surpass all of our expectations this early in the year. I see no reason why we can’t be quietly confident of that, but at the same time it will require a lot of hard work behind the scenes.
“We’ve not yet seen everyone’s true potential, and I’m expecting a very exciting and very close-fought Rally Sweden.”
A selection of royalty-free photographs from all rounds of the WRC is now available for download from the dedicated WRC Media Room on the Red Bull Content Pool website (redbullcontentpool.com/fiawrc). Simply register for full access. Further media assets will be available throughout this weekend’s Rally Sweden and thereafter during the following 11 rounds of the globetrotting 2017 series.

Ice to meet you, Andreas
Red Bull TV will be broadcasting from Rally Sweden, round two of the World Rally Championship, with live coverage and special features.
Red Bull TV’s guest reporter for this second stop of the championship is none other than Andreas Mikkelsen: a driver who has stood on the podium of this epic winter event twice.
Not only that but the Norwegian has won three world rallies and also finished third in the world championship for the last three years, as well as storming the WRC2 class in Monte-Carlo last month.
The 27-year-old has got looks, talent and intelligence. In fact, he’s got pretty much everything apart from a full-time drive, following Volkswagen’s shock withdrawal last year. Still, their loss is our gain this weekend. Andreas, reporting in Sweden together with Mike Chen, will bring the unique inside perspective of a modern rally driver to Red Bull TV’s coverage. Catch him while you can.
The first dedicated WRC programme on Red Bull TV is at 9pm* on Friday 10 February with further daily highlights broadcast at 9pm* on both Saturday and Sunday evenings. Saturday’s live coverage starts at 1.50pm*.
All shows will remain available to watch on-demand on Red Bull TV once the rally has finished. Red Bull TV is available to watch entirely free of charge online at redbull.tv and via mobile, laptop or smart television, or on the dedicated Red Bull TV app, available both for iPhone and Android.
